All of our gardens are bespoke, we work with you to create a unique space which will enhance the lives of you and your family.
Through our comprehensive design service, we re-imagine your outside space – be it a sprawling country estate or intimate urban courtyard, we are passionate about creating enchanting spaces. Although every project is different, our full design package tends to follow a similar path.
The initial consultation is about spending some time on site and discussing the project with you, the client. It’s important to get to know you and your requirements for the garden and to absorb the atmosphere of the space. From here we draw up a brief which is sent to you for your approval, along with a detailed breakdown of the process and our design fee proposal.
A topographical survey will record all the facts about the garden – existing level changes, services, utilities, buildings, trees and so on. This gives us all the factual information that we need to get designing. We can carry this out ourselves on some small scale gardens and where we cannot, we can arrange this service on your behalf. At this point we will also visit to obtain more information, carrying out a photographic survey and analysis to feed into the design process.
The outline design is where we chat through the overall scheme and the concepts involved. We will produce an A3 outline design presentation which includes scaled plans, elevations, perspectives, planting & materials palettes and precedent images. We will also produce a 3D computer model which we can walk through together. This part of the process should open up a dialogue allowing the design to evolve as we move through the following stages.
The design really is in the detail, it’s what elevates a space and it’s why we meticulously work through every aspect of the design – be it grouting colour or lighting fixtures, it is all considered. At the detail design stage we will produce drawings which enable the garden to be built and our shared vision to be realised. Any changes from the outline design will be drawn up into the masterplan, all the technical construction drawings will be produced and the setting out plans finalised. This package enables a landscape contractor to accurately cost the build.
The planting design process is part of the detail design but it is also a package which some clients wish to have in isolation. We always tailor the planting to your tastes and needs, often working closely with you at this point. Planting plans, schedules and specifications will be produced and this will enable Harry Holding Garden Design Ltd or a landscape contractor to quote for the scheme. As designers, we're hands on and practical and always love to personally plant the schemes we design.
Often we work with a nominated contractor; however, if required, we will move to the tender stage where we will obtain two or three quotes from reputable landscape contractors. We will create the necessary documents and issue them with the full drawing package, bill of quantities and specifications. Once we have received the quotes we can do a full cost analysis and discuss the best steps forward.
We work closely with the landscape contractor conducting regular site meetings and checks to ensure that the garden is built as agreed. As mentioned, we will quote for our planting services and where required we will source and select trees, plants, furniture, sculpture or bespoke items on behalf of you and the contractor.
A garden is a living and evolving ecosystem that requires sensitive aftercare and management to ensure it thrives into the future. After the garden build, we enjoy fostering long-term relationships with our clients and the horticulturalists who care for the space, helping to guide its development. Our sister company, LDN Horticulture, offers aftercare and garden maintenance for our London-based schemes. Established in 2016 by HHS founder, Harry Holding, LDN Horticulture shares the same core values and ethos as our design studio.
