Experienced garden designer or Landscape Architect

Harry Holding Studio is looking for an experienced garden designer or Landscape Architect to join a small team, based in Notting Hill Gate, London.

We offer hybrid working, but time in the studio is required every week [at least one day].

Location: London & UK - most projects are London based with some further afield.

Holiday: 30 days holiday (includes Bank Holidays)
Birthday day: All employees have their Birthday as paid holiday

Reporting Relationships: Reporting to – Harry Holding (Director & Lead Designer) & Senior Designer (Alex Horlick)

Development Path: This role has the possibility of progressing to a Senior Designer

About HHS:

The studio is a multi-award winning, forward-thinking and environmentally conscious landscape design practice. Their work has widespread recognition including Harry being noted as one of House & Gardens’ Top 50 garden designers and receiving awards from the RHS, SGD and other industry bodies.

The studio has designed multiple gardens at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Their 'School Food Matters Garden' won the People's Choice Award in 2023 and in 2024 the RHS invited HHS to design their feature garden ‘The RHS No Adults Allowed Garden’.

HHS designs are plant-driven and ecologically minded with a signature blend of clean, contemporary design contrasted with soft, naturalistic planting. Taking inspiration from surrounding landscape and architecture, HHS create resilient, immersive and enchanting spaces that are firmly rooted to their environment.

Job Summary:
To carry out garden and landscape design work to the highest standards with a focus on contemporary design and naturalistic planting. Work on all aspects of design projects from outline design through to on site project management. Assist Harry and the team with the development of outline and detailed design elements and CAD work. Take projects from design stages through to our soft landscaping and aftercare teams, coordinating with clients, contractors and suppliers to ensure projects are enacted to the highest standards and carefully monitoring the evolution of the gardens. Assist with developing the design studio through improving systems and the delivery of designs. Embody the company ethos and develop sustainable practices.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Design:

  • Collaborate on landscape and garden design projects from initial client contact to site completion, while assisting the design team on specific elements.
  • Manage all phases of landscape project development, focusing on detailed design, adhering to project timelines, and liaising with suppliers and contractors.
  • Assist with inquiries for new design work, visiting sites, meeting clients, and aid preparation of design fee proposals
  • Prepare presentations, outline designs, detailed designs, and specification documents.
  • Foster strong client relationships, ensuring exceptional experiences and positively representing the company.

Design Studio Development:

  • Help develop and improve studio practices and systems. Ongoing contributions into existing systems and input into how systems and processes can be improved.

Presentation Graphics:

  • Create visual graphics, moodboards and presentation documents for design proposals.

Tender / Contracts:

  • Develop tender packages and handle contract administration with selected contractors.

Project Management:

  • Attend site visits in the UK and internationally to document site conditions, manage design work, and track construction progress.
  • Oversee or assist in managing both in-house soft landscaping projects and external subcontractors, ensuring high-quality work and client satisfaction.
  • Manage billable project time and collaborate with the Studio Manager to ensure timely invoicing, in line with the company’s project management systems

Purchasing & Supplier Relations:

  • Assisting with the planning & purchasing of materials for projects to ensure efficient and productive workflow. Maintain relationships with existing suppliers and develop /foster strong relationships with new suppliers, always looking for new and innovative products.

Research:

  • Assist with project research, including sourcing materials and samples for construction.
  • Conduct research on materials and plants to inform larger projects and ensure technical accuracy.

New Business , Marketing & Social Media:

  • Support with new business, marketing and social media efforts to grow the design side of the company, including content gathering and promotion.

Sustainability:

  • Contribute to the company’s sustainability goals, assisting in practices aimed at achieving carbon net zero by 2030.

Health & Safety:

  • All staff will adhere to the current health and safety policy within the Company and, as appropriate to their role, adopt and adhere to the established risk assessment procedures

Skills and experience required:

  • Degree or relevant qualification in Landscape Architecture/Garden Design
  • Three years experience in practice.
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, Excel spreadsheets, Google Drive.
  • Excellent design and technical skills.
  • Comprehensive plant knowledge and a keen interest in naturalistic planting design.
  • Ability to develop and visually communicate design ideas from outline design through to detailed design.
  • Must be able to work on your own initiative with a proactive and flexible attitude.
  • Willingness and ability for working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and management skills.
  • Strong verbal and written skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Be a proactive and motivated all-rounder with a positive attitude.
  • Site experience during construction.
  • Clean UK driving licence is a requirement of this role, which includes site and research visits and sometimes involves travel to more remote locations.
  • Show garden experience is beneficial

Personal Management:

  • You are expected to arrive promptly for work both online and in person.
  • Emails should be filed regularly and responded to in an efficient and professional manner.

Job summary:
We are looking for a passionate, personable and knowledgeable horticulturalist to join our team which is based in NW3 (Primrose Hill). The role will require a real drive and desire to deliver exceptional quality garden services to high-end residential houses. A hands on and joyful attitude is required to fit into the company culture and a thirst for knowledge to continue progressing within the role.

The role:

  • Have excellent time management skills
  • Tidy and considerate (side access is not always available so we often go through people’s homes)
  • Confident with plant health and cross contamination measures
  • Confident with all areas of shaping and pruning (with plant health as the main priority)
  • Understanding of common pests and diseases with preventative and treatment methods being eco friendly (we are environmentally conscious in everything we do, this is at the core of our ethos)
  • A good knowledge of tools and how to use them effectively
  • Knowledge of or the desire to learn more about permaculture and organic gardening
  • An appreciation of and understanding of garden design
