The Eden Project

Chelsea gives you a flat rectangle, three weeks to build it, and millions of visitors in person and online. The brief was to capture Morecambe Bay, its landscape and its people, in a show garden, and to make something that could be taken apart afterwards and rebuilt as a permanent public park at the new Eden Project Morecambe.

Designed with the Eden Project and Alex Michaelis of Michaelis Boyd Associates, and supported by Project Giving Back. At its centre stands a solar-powered pavilion: part shelter, part outdoor classroom, where craft, horticulture and innovation come together. The garden is about regeneration, and about bringing young adults into the journey, creating the next generation of horticulturists along the way.

The planting reads as a soft, windswept coastal meadow, alive with pinks, yellows and flashes of blue. Resilient grasses and perennials move with the wind, with edimentals woven throughout. The garden won the Environmental Innovation Award and a Silver-Gilt medal, and is now being rebuilt as the arrival garden to Eden Project Morecambe.
