Eden Project Morecambe

This is the permanent version of the Chelsea garden, expanded thirty times into a public realm that has to work as the arrival garden to Eden, a public park and a community garden all at once. Robust landforms and carefully positioned micro-climates create spaces of varying atmosphere and deliver the shelter that both people and planting need here.

Terraces of shell-based concrete, made from recycled local marine byproducts, local limestone pathways and mounded, dune-inspired islands work their way through the space. A future-facing community structure gives shelter and a landmark that connects to the iconic architecture of the Eden biomes beyond. The planting is dense, wildlife-rich coastal meadow, interlaced with salt-tolerant perennials, grasses and edible species.
