A house built inside a working Victorian cemetery in Fulham, wrapped by twelve acres of wild green space brimming with meadows and mature trees. The original Neo-Gothic lodge still stands on the plot, restored and reimagined with a contemporary extension.

The brief was a series of gardens that would hold their own against bold contemporary architecture while treating the historic lodge and the cemetery with respect. We designed outward rather than inward, opening a conversation with the green space beyond the boundary so the gardens read as part of it, blurring the edges to make them feel far more expansive than they are.
The gardens and planting are layered and evocative: heightened versions of nature that take their cue from what already grows in the cemetery. The house appeared on Channel 4’s Grand Designs in January 2021.
